Name: Paul Collins

Company Role: CEO

Favourite quote:
I don't have a favourite quote however, the best piece of advice I got from anyone was, 'It is not about you'.

My dad said it to me when I first started Titan Solutions and it was said to me again a few years later by one of my colleagues and good friend. It has always stuck with as a great piece of advice because we are quick to forget about the people who surround us and that we cannot do it all ourselves. We must trust in other people and understand that you cannot manage every aspect of a business. You kill the entrepreneurial energy that we are looking for, and you do not allow people to take that opportunity to take the business forward and grow.

Tell us a bit about your background
I’m from the West of Ireland originally but I am now living in Tipperary, the home of hurling. I have an undergraduate degree in Engineering and a postgraduate in Reliability and Statistics.

I have a passion for gardening, I really enjoy the freedom it offers am I enjoy sports of all types. I’m also a taxi driver in my spare time to my teenage and almost adult children.

What do you do at Titan?

  • Fostering the culture of the company – Shaping the values and standards of Titan - Passion, trust and innovation, agility and keep the business driven to move forward with ambition.
  • Being the face of the business.
  • Taking charge of the bigger picture – this means making sure the business has a plan of where it wants to go and how it’s going to get there.
  • Delegating key tasks to senior management – having a strong management team can help us focus on growing the business.

If you could write your own job title that best describes what you do here, what would it be?

As a small start-up business, it must be ‘Jack of all Trades’. My work is really my passion and I put so much time and thought into it with tactical things that help us make incremental improvements, whilst keeping an eye on the all-important cash flow, customer service, process service delivery and more.

What’s your favourite thing about your job?
The excitement and enthusiasm about the journey we are on – I love the work that I do and that I have the freedom to choose what to focus on and how I might help make our company better each day. Plus, no corporate reports or reporting!

What do you enjoy about the work you do?
Working with my colleagues in achieving their goals for the business.

What was your favourite subject in school, and why?
My favourite subject in school depended highly on how much I liked the teacher, but it would have to be Physics since it required very little rote learning.

Quantitative skills and an instinct to see the world in terms of things that can be measured was what attracted me and something that wrecks everyone’s head nowadays!

Of course, being an entrepreneur is risky, it’s not for everyone but I would argue that a person with a physics background is better placed than many to make a success of it. That’s because you can guarantee one thing about entrepreneurs – if they don’t think big, they are certain to fail.

What are the values that drive you?
The values that drive me are the same ones I try instilling in Titan which are creativity, trust, and passion.
